Award Spotlight: Critical Language Scholarship

 

The Critical Language Scholarship Program seeks to support American students in their efforts to master critical foreign language skills in an immersive experience that engages meaningfully with other countries. 

Recurring every summer, CLS provides instruction in fifteen languages that support America’s national security and economic prosperity. CLS participants are considered ambassadors, giving the opportunity to share American values and provide professional ties to promoting American influence abroad. Candidates continue their language studies beyond the scholarship period, to apply their critical language skills in their future professional endeavors.

This program is partnered with the U.S. government and seeks to increase the number of Americans that are studying and specializing in critical foreign languages. Students participate in educational opportunities, as well as cultural activities and excursions designed to expand students’ understanding of the history, politics, culture and daily life of their host country.

All U.S. undergraduate and graduate students in every field are eligible, as well as students of diverse backgrounds and majors are encouraged to apply. Find out more about eligibility here.

Here's how to apply

Begin by reading all of the application instructions provided by the fellowship’s sponsoring organization. Ensure that you fully understand all of the procedures including the deadlines to meet. Having a firm understanding of what is expected from you will help to avoid technical disqualification.

Make an appointment with your fellowship advisor. Our team will help you to determine which programs fit you best, navigate the application process and give you advice on your project statements, essays and letters of recommendation. During our meeting we will also discuss your goals and create an action plan to help you during the application process.
