The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion group-based program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 14 critical languages. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.
The CLS Program is a nationally competitive award open to all eligible U.S. undergraduate and graduate students in every field. Review the full set of eligibility requirements for the CLS Program.
Language you can study include:
Offered at all levels (Beginning, Advanced Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced): Arabic (CLS Spark, only), Azerbaijani, Bangla, Chinese (CLS Spark, only), Hindi, Indonesian, Persian, Portuguese, Russian (CLS Spark, only), Swahili, Turkish, Urdu
Requires at least one academic year of prior target language study or the equivalent (Advanced Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced): Arabic, Korean, Russian
Requires at least two academic years of prior target language study or the equivalent (Intermediate and Advanced only): Chinese and Japanese
